War and national crisis

The conversation

You check the news over and over, as though that will give you control over what's happening, and then you feel worse, not better. There's also the quiet guilt: how are you allowed to laugh, to rest, to open Netflix, when things outside are not okay? The way Gili sees it, the division among us is more dangerous than anything else right now, and unity is the strongest weapon we have against it. And it starts with small things: how many times a day you let yourself check the news, and who you turn to when it's hard.

The truth

  • Division is the greatest enemy of the Jewish people. Unity is the strongest weapon against it.

  • This is mostly a war of consciousness, and in the end the person who rules their own consciousness is the one who wins.

  • Obsessively checking the news doesn't give you any real control. It only feeds fear. Twice a day is enough.

  • The guilt about sitting at home calls for telling the difference between what's our responsibility and what simply isn't.

  • Our soul needs protecting the way a small child does. Not every picture and not every video has to get in.

  • Distraction (helping someone else, Netflix, books, even going back to old episodes of the podcast) is a legitimate tool, not an escape.

Questions and answers

Is the war a punishment from God?

Gili stresses that the Creator is good and does good, and that the war is not a punishment He brought on us. She warns against dismissing your intuition and asks you to test every message: does it stir up love and unity, or hatred and division? Even in a time this hard, the thing to do is to draw strength from faith and not to question the Creator's ways.

How many times a day is it normal to check the news in a time like this without it doing damage?

Compulsively keeping up doesn't give you any real control over the situation. All it does is flood your consciousness with poison. Her recommendation: once or twice a day and no more. Beyond that, you're just taking in the same information over and over, and that feeds fear and dread.

Why can't I stop scrolling the news, and what will keep this from leaving a scar on me?

Gili says the way to prevent post-traumatic stress is to let the feelings out: to talk, to share, to tell people what we're going through instead of locking it inside. Really listening to someone else, staying beside them and paying attention, is what the people around us need most right now, more than any other advice.

Why am I not able to stop scrolling the news?

The division among us is the real enemy of the Jewish people, and unity is exactly the strongest weapon we have against it. The blessing comes from loving your fellow Jews, and that includes the ones who think differently, not only the ones who are like us.

What can help me take my mind off it and get through the hard days without getting addicted to refreshing the news?

Gili recommends putting your energy into helping other people: volunteering, collecting supplies and moving them. And for anyone who isn't doing something like that, simply to take your mind off it: watch Netflix, read books, download the series you've been meaning to see, even listen to earlier episodes of the podcast. The goal is a healthy distraction, because in the end this is also a war of consciousness.

Gili's original episode description

The truth hurts, and it also blows up in our faces. We're all in trauma.

It isn't simple to take in the reality we've been living these last few days. Reality is beyond anything you could imagine.

In this episode Tal and Gili talk about the situation, about what's happening in Israel, about what the Creator is telling us and about how we move forward through these hard days.

"A time for peace and a time for war."

We'll survive either way, because Am Yisrael Chai, the people of Israel lives.

Don't stay alone with those thoughts and those feelings. There are ways to break trauma down and release it from the body. Letting the emotion find expression is necessary and worth doing. It's one of the ways to break the trauma down, and we're here to help you do it.

To everyone who was at the parties in the south, our hearts are with you. We can't even imagine what you went through! The trauma has happened. Let's face it together!
