Truth, lies and authenticity

The Truth Hurts · Episode 33 · audio in Hebrew

The conversation

You think the thoughts you have are yours, but a lot of them reached you before you ever had a chance to choose. Gili says that whatever you believe becomes your truth, even when it's a limiting belief that was set in childhood and has never been checked since. This isn't only theory. Behind money, relationships, health or loneliness, there is usually that same old belief, still writing the story. The question isn't whether you can change it. The question is whether you're willing to look again at what is actually true for you.

The truth

  • People threw up on the first airplane flights, and that points to something bigger: the brain has a hard time digesting a reality it doesn't know.

  • Truth isn't objective. What you choose to believe is what becomes your truth.

  • Most people think, on automatic, thoughts that look a lot like their parents' thoughts, without even noticing.

  • Behind every problem, money, relationships, health, loneliness, sits a belief that was set back in childhood.

  • Thought patterns can be changed, and that isn't theory. It's the result you see in the people who have already done it.

Questions and answers

What does the word "miracle" actually mean?

A miracle isn't something God does. It's the job of human beings. The only meaning of the word is rising above a limitation and being freed from it, mainly by being freed from self-pity, jealousy and anger.

How do I check whether what I think about myself is really true, or whether I'm just convincing myself of it?

Gili recommends examining your feelings and asking yourself again whether this is really true, or only something you believed because that's what you heard at home or in the world around you. Don't answer on automatic.

Who decided what's right in my life, and what's one sentence I can say to myself to finally change something?

She recommends using the declaration "I am willing to change," repeating it a few times, and even saying it out loud, because that willingness is what lets change happen.

What example does Gili give of childhood beliefs shaping an adult life?

She tells about a client who refused to take a course at work because she believed she wasn't good at studying, a belief that came from what a third-grade teacher once told her.
