The conversation

There's a feeling a lot of people carry around: that no matter how much you get, something is always still missing. Gili Man Wolner suggests looking at it from a different angle. The will to receive is the only vessel that was created in us, and the constant sense of lack that we all know comes from there. The bigger the lack, the bigger the pleasure in receiving, but receiving that comes with no contribution at all on our part can leave a feeling of shame behind, even when you can't put your finger on it.

The truth

  • Understanding what healing of the soul is has to start from a bigger question: what is the purpose of Creation?

  • Gili says the purpose of Creation is to do good for created beings: to give pleasure without end.

  • The will to receive is the only vessel that was created, and that is where our constant sense of lack comes from.

  • Gili says that the bigger the lack, the bigger the pleasure in receiving, like the difference between someone who comes to a meal hungry and someone who has already eaten.

  • Receiving without effort or any contribution from our side creates an inner feeling of shame, even when we're not aware of it.

  • The soul, unlike the simple will to receive, wants to become like the Creator and not to stay someone who eats for free.

Questions and answers

What's the point of my existing at all? Does anyone have an honest answer?

The purpose is that the Creator wants to do good for created beings and to give them endless pleasure. That's why a will to receive was created in us, so that we would be able to take that good in. The bigger our lack is, the bigger the pleasure we experience in receiving.

What's the difference between the soul and the animal soul?

The animal soul doesn't think. It reacts out of pure instinct. It gets annoyed when somebody annoys it, and it eats when it's hungry. The soul, by contrast, is the "real me" that wants to give and to become like the Creator, and not only to react to immediate needs.

If my soul is so high and so special, what does it need a body for at all?

Because the soul can't act in this world without a system that will actually run it. It needs the body to translate its intentions into real actions, exactly like a coachman who needs a horse and a cart to get from one place to another.

How do I know whether I'm connected to myself at all, to my soul?

One of the main signs is a feeling of joy, because connection to the soul brings you to act out of fullness and faith rather than out of lack. A person who is connected to their soul will feel satisfaction and joy, because the soul's role is to connect us to the divine.

Why is it that when somebody gives me everything for free I actually feel weak, as if I have no self-confidence? What do you do with that?

The best thing is to look around you and notice that there are other people missing exactly the same thing, and to give it to them. Giving to someone who has the same lack you have is the first and fastest way to heal yourself.

Gili's original episode description

The episode focuses on one of the biggest and deepest questions in life:

What is the purpose?

In an age when everyone is talking about mental health, it's important to stop for a moment and understand what this thing called the soul (nefesh) actually is.

Gili and Tal set out on a deep journey into fundamental questions:

What are we made of?

What is the nefesh?

What is the neshamah?

And what is the real purpose behind all of it?

The episode offers a wide perspective that allows a deeper understanding of human existence.

Gili explains that to get to a healthy soul in a healthy body, it's crucial to understand our deep purpose. In the conversation they stress that using the soul wrongly creates an experience of suffering, and they offer ways to turn that around.

In Gili's tips corner you'll find a range of practical tools that will help you deal with life in a healthier way, while connecting to your real purpose.
