2023 In, 2024 Out: What Will You Stop? What Will You Start?

Episode 39 · December 28, 2023

Change, feeling stuck and procrastination

The Truth Hurts · Episode 39 · audio in Hebrew

The conversation

You're on the doorstep of 40 and feeling that something has to change now, as if time has run out. Gili says this isn't only a subjective feeling. This is the age with the highest suicide rate, but also with the highest percentage of people who start running marathons, the same intensity going in two completely opposite directions. In psychology they call it the age of understanding, and the way she sees it, that is exactly the moment when your eyes open and you see life differently. What helps you get through it, she says, is not spending that power on worry but aiming it at believing and creating, and that starts with the way you talk to yourself in the morning.

The truth

  • Age 39 is described as "the last straight": the age with the highest suicide rate, but also with the highest percentage of people who start running marathons, the same energy going in two directions.

  • In psychology, 40 is considered "the age of understanding," and today the midlife crisis can arrive at 30 or at 50 as well.

  • A quotation from the book of Exodus about the children of Israel: only after 40 years in the desert do their eyes open to see and their ears open to hear.

  • 2023 is presented as "a year of 7" and 2024 as "a year of 8," a year of reversal according to the numerology Gili presents.

  • The first tip for the new year: the way you talk to yourself is critical, and how you start your morning decides your day.

  • A personal story: Gili's son, a soldier, has been in Ichilov hospital for more than a week, and even so she finds a parking space with complete confidence on every visit. A live demonstration of positive self-talk.

Questions and answers

Why is it right now, around 40, that I feel everything has to happen?

In psychology, 40 is considered "the age of understanding," and it's the age people talk about most in the context of the midlife crisis, even if in recent years that crisis has been moving around, arriving sometimes at 30 and sometimes at 50. Gili also brings a quotation from the book of Exodus about the children of Israel in the desert, whose eyes and ears only open after 40 years, and who only then understand the world.

I'm worried and tense about my age all the time, and I feel like I'm spending all my strength on it. How do I do something with it instead of just worrying?

Instead of spending energy on worry, which creates a negative reality, Gili suggests aiming it at believing, at creating, at loving, at growing and at shining, and also harnessing it to support physical recovery.
