The conversation

You follow someone who posts pictures of food every week and you feel like you know him. In fact you know almost nothing about him. Amihai Beer, an attorney and the CEO of Kibbutz Sdot Yam, opened his page not to become famous but on the recommendation of his psychologist, after a health and emotional crisis at 31. In his words, Instagram became a therapeutic tool that lets him express a creative side he did not know he had, especially given his dyslexia and dysgraphia. But he still makes a conscious choice about how much of himself to show. Behind the scenes his wife Sivan is a full partner, even though she stays far away from the camera.

The truth

  • Amihai Beer, 43, an attorney and the CEO of Kibbutz Sdot Yam, opened his Instagram account on the recommendation of his psychologist.

  • The fish dishes he most loves to make are exactly the ones that get the fewest likes. A week of hot dogs and pasta doubles his reach, but he does not care.

  • He sees Instagram as a therapeutic tool that allows him creative expression, especially in light of his dyslexia and dysgraphia.

  • In recent years he has learned that real fulfillment comes from the inside. Praise from the outside "goes in one ear and out the other".

  • His wife Sivan is a full partner behind the scenes. She cooks with him on weekends even when there is a Friday night dinner to make, and she gives him room to flourish without putting limits on him.

  • He does not define his dream as a single goal but as constant movement, all of it at once: the kibbutz, Instagram, drums. The main thing is not to stop.

Questions and answers

Why did Amihai open an Instagram account in the first place?

He opened it on the recommendation of his psychologist, as part of treatment following a mental and physical crisis. The psychologist told him he had the medical file of an 80-year-old and asked what he was doing for himself that suited his actual age. Photographing food was already his hobby.

What happened to him at 31 that led to the big change?

He had a blood clot in his head after overexerting himself running and becoming severely dehydrated, and at the same time he started having anxiety. Those events pushed him into psychological treatment and into a process of getting to know himself and his own needs all over again.

How does my wife look at the fact that I'm becoming exposed and recognizable online?

She is a full partner and very supportive. She helps him turn out dishes on weekends and gives him room to flourish in his own world without imposing limits on him, even though she herself stays far away from the camera and is not visible online.

How did October 7 affect what he posts on the page?

After October 7 he started expressing his Israeli identity more, and he describes that as natural: he posts the flag, he pitched in to cook meals for evacuees, and he recreates dishes in memory of loved ones who were killed.

Why is he suddenly getting less attention or recognition on the page even though he is doing well?

There is a side of him that enjoys the appreciation and a side that is careful and wary of exposure, so he makes a conscious choice about how much of himself to reveal online, unlike other creators who push themselves forward at every opportunity.

What does Amihai dream of having in the future?

He does not have one final goal. He defines his dream as being in motion and developing all the time: in his role at the kibbutz, on Instagram and in personal hobbies like drums, without stopping at any point.
