Thought and creating reality

The Truth Hurts · Episode 55 · audio in Hebrew

The conversation

It hurts right now. It really hurts, and sometimes it seems as if the world outside has turned as ugly as whatever is going on inside. It is tempting to want to run away from it, but the way Gili sees it, a time like this is exactly when we have to come back to ourselves again and again. Here she takes apart the saying that there is nothing more whole than a broken heart, and in her words the real break is not in what other people did to us, but in realizing that we created this reality ourselves.

The truth

  • When the sadness is too big, do not fight it. Give it a fixed window of time in your day, and then go back to your routine.

  • "There is nothing more whole than a broken heart" is not about whoever hurt you. It is about realizing that you created this reality yourself.

  • Creating reality is not a wish you toss into the air. It is a practice that puts thought, speech and action together.

  • Giving thanks for something as if it has already happened changes something in the body itself, not only in your head.

  • Anyone who wants to stand out should look at what everybody else is doing and then do exactly the opposite.

  • The world looks like whatever our focus is on, and when it hurts inside, the outside looks ugly too.

Questions and answers

What does "there is nothing more whole than a broken heart" mean? Why is it supposedly a good thing that your heart is broken?

It is not about pain that was caused from the outside. It is the understanding that when you look at a reality that is not good for you, the real break comes from knowing that you created that reality yourself through your own thoughts, and not from the fact that somebody hurt you or betrayed you.

What is creating reality?

It is mental training meant to let you receive what you want in life. It is not a matter of thinking thoughts and hoping they come true, but of seeing it, feeling it and giving thanks for it.

What are the practical tips for creating reality?

Be very clear about what you want, set aside a few minutes a day to imagine the thing as if it is already happening, and give thanks for it as if it has already taken place.

How can you cope with sadness without drowning in it?

According to the Tanya, it is better not to deny your feelings. Set aside a fixed time every day to deal with them, to cry and to let the pain out, and afterward go back to the routine of life and put your attention on the beauty in the world.

What helped Gili stay sane and see something beautiful during the period when her son was on a ventilator in the hospital?

Instead of connecting to the pain and to the loss, which is what people expected of her, she chose to connect with her whole being to joy, to health, to wholeness and to miracles, and that is what happened in the end.

Gili's original episode description

In this episode, Gili and Tal go deep into the feelings of pain and sadness that come with the spirit of this period, what you might call the broken hearts club.

They focus on the understanding that there is nothing more whole than a broken heart, and they discuss how breaking can lead to renewal and to personal growth. They offer an approach of personal responsibility toward a hard reality, alongside the recognition that we are responsible for creating the reality we live in.

The conversation develops toward creating reality out of faith and coping with the fears that hold us back. They talk about how much it matters to be out of the ordinary, not to belong to the majority that makes up the base of the social pyramid, and to create a personal reality that reflects who we really want to be. They encourage us to act, to dare to change and to believe in our ability to work magic in our own lives.
