Personal fulfillment and finding your calling

The Truth Hurts · Episode 59 · audio in Hebrew

The conversation

You look around you and it isn't always clear what your calling is, and you wait for the moment when it will sort itself out on its own. The way Gili sees it, the answer is much closer than it seems. It starts with whoever needs you most right this minute, and from there it widens out, one circle after another. Giving, she says, is the real secret of life, and even the hardest things ultimately turn out to be for the good. And sometimes the simplest step of all, deciding to be happy no matter what is going on around you, is worth more than anything else.

The truth

  • Who needs you most right now: that is the starting point for finding your calling, and from there you widen out, one circle after another.

  • The secret of life is giving: start small and widen out gradually.

  • Faith means understanding that everything that happens is for the good, and that trials are a gift that leads to a miracle.

  • Deciding to be happy no matter what is going on around you is worth more than being a billionaire.

  • The body, your focus and your language are three channels that really do change your mood.

  • Five minutes a day of guided imagery, picturing the better version of your life, speeds up the change.

Questions and answers

How am I supposed to know what I'm even here for, what my purpose in life is?

Look around you and see who needs you most: that is your assignment right now. Once you have finished repairing and helping there, you widen out to a bigger circle and check who needs you there, and so on. There is no need to invent assignments for yourself. When people need you, you will simply know what to do.

What is faith?

Faith (emunah) is the simple understanding that everything that happens is for the good. That is what makes it possible to hold on through a trial, because the Hebrew word for a trial, nisayon, comes from nes, a miracle: whoever goes through the trial arrives at the miracle.

How do you change your mood when you fall?

You change your state of mind through three things. The body, because moving your body changes your mood immediately. Your focus, which you control by asking yourself different questions. And your language, the words you use about yourself and about other people, because words create reality.

Why is it worth taking risks in life instead of clinging to what you already have?

People who cling to things and hold on tight think they are in control, but they are actually losing control. When you have faith that everything is always changing for the good, there is no fear of taking a risk, because even if the thing does change, it changes in a better direction.

What makes the difference between the people who manage to change their lives and the ones who stay stuck?

The difference is a person's standards. Whatever you are willing to put up with in your life is what stays. The moment you decide you are not willing to put up with it anymore, something in your life really does change.

Gili's original episode description

This episode deals with the question everyone asks themselves: what is my calling? Why do we tie ourselves in knots over that search? The answer is simpler than it seems. Look around you. Who needs you? Go help them. When somebody needs you, you will know exactly what to do.

Gili and Tal talk about how much it matters to look for meaning and to ask questions, and about understanding that once you know why, the what and the how become a lot clearer. Life is full of challenges, but the decision to live a full and happy life is in our hands. Our focus dictates our energy. Wherever the focus is, that is where the energy flows.

So what is the secret of a happy life? The key to a blessed life lies in learning faith and in understanding that everything that happens to us is for the good. How do you do that? Here are a few practical tips from Gili to help you reach the best version of yourself.
