Thought and creating reality

The conversation

The same reaction again, the same people again, the same feeling again that something is repeating itself. Gili argues that this is no accident. The way she sees it, what happens outside is a reflection of what has been planted inside, and as long as you don't treat the root, nothing really changes. Right now in particular, she says, there's a rare window of time in which the harsh judgments can be sweetened, which is why, when something painful comes back around, the smartest thing you can do is hold yourself back and not react. It may sound like a small thing, but she believes it's one of the most meaningful things a person can do for themselves.

The truth

  • Gili says the mind is like a garden. What you plant is what will grow, and you can't be negative and expect a good life.

  • The month of Elul is considered a special opportunity because it's a time when harsh judgments can be sweetened, which is exactly why this is the moment to hold back and not react.

  • She points out that the kabbalists speak about roots and branches. Everything that happens to us has a hidden source, and real change happens there, not in the outward result.

  • Like attracts like. The people around us are a reflection of who we are, and there's always a choice to change an environment that drags us down.

  • She recommends speaking kindly to ourselves even when we've made a mistake, and dropping the self-righteousness and the judging of other people, because it all comes back to us anyway.

  • In her view, people take life far too seriously and forget that it's mostly a playground that gets folded up in the end.

Questions and answers

Why is the month of Elul considered a good and positive month?

Elul is a positive month because it offers an opportunity for change. It's a time when the judgments can be sweetened, meaning that the results of what we did over the past few months come back to us so that we get a chance to repair them. Gili recommends holding back and not reacting when something negative comes around again, and making use of the time between now and Rosh Hashanah.

Is there a difference between why this is happening to me in the first place and why it keeps repeating itself?

According to what's said in the episode, the kabbalists divide reality into a revealed part and a hidden part. The branches are the revealed part: the result, the reality we see. The roots are the hidden part: the higher source of everything that happens to a person. So to make a real change, you have to find and change the root, and not only the outward result.

Why is it that when someone who was bad to me comes back, I open the door to them again? And what did the Baal Shem Tov say about everything outside being a reflection of me?

The Baal Shem Tov teaches that there's nothing outside: reality is a projection of a person's subconscious. So if you want to change something in reality, there's nothing to do on the outside. The only work is on the inside, in the soul.

Why is it that every time I wean myself off a toxic person, they come back to me? What does Gili say about it, and how do you create a different reality?

Silence is one of the most powerful tools we have for creating reality. Gili explains that when a person has command of their emotions and doesn't react out of pain or injury, they give the situation no power and don't invite it back, and that counts as a great inner victory.

What does Dr. Joe Dispenza say you have to do so that the life you actually want will happen?

According to what's said in the episode, Dr. Joe Dispenza recommends closing your eyes and running a mental dress rehearsal, imagining situations and the way you'll respond in them. The episode notes that research in the field claims the brain doesn't distinguish between reality and imagination, so this kind of mental practice may affect how you act in real life.

Gili's original episode description

Our mind is like a garden. You can't plant tomato seeds and expect cucumbers to grow. It's the same with reality. You can't be negative, put yourself down and surround yourself with a negative environment and negative people, and then expect to have a positive, wonderful life by some kind of magic. Exactly like in a garden, what you planted is what will grow. So if we want a positive life, we'll have to change the way we talk to ourselves. Speak to yourself kindly. Even if you made a mistake! Did you learn something? Then move on. The next thing is to change our thoughts, about ourselves and about other people. Drop the self-righteousness and the judging. It isn't your job, and between you and me, when you judge and criticize other people you're really doing it to yourself.

And if you feel that the people around you are dragging you down, tending toward negativity and low energy, then maybe it's time to find different people. It's a matter of free choice and daily work, and that's creating reality at its best.

You become the thing you identify with: a thought, a feeling, an action. And out of that identification you draw toward you similar people, similar events and similar situations. There's a reason people say that money goes with money, or that the beautiful people go with the beautiful people. Like attracts like. That's the law here. You can complain about it, or you can become the thing you're asking to be.

You have to believe in yourself. You have to believe that it's possible. We create our own lives, and it starts with the way you look at life. If you think there aren't enough opportunities and that life is hard and unfair, that's what you'll experience in reality. But if you believe that there's abundance, that there are opportunities, then those things will exist in your life! It means holding on to an almost imaginary way of thinking. A person has to have a vision, and it's better if the vision is even a little unrealistic. Everything is imaginary until it exists in reality. It's a matter of free choice, and that's the headline over reality itself.
