Prepare Your Soul for Summer

You don't control what happens to you, only what happens afterward

Episode 13 · June 15, 2023

Change, feeling stuck and procrastination

The Truth Hurts · Episode 13 · audio in Hebrew

The conversation

Somebody else makes you angry, hurts you, or just sets you off, and it's easy to stay right there with the feeling that the problem is theirs. Gili has a different angle: every moment like that, from the smallest flash of irritation to real anger, is a mirror reflecting back what's sitting inside you, and you don't have to open up your whole psychological history to fix it. The way she sees it, you have no control over what happens or over your first instinctive reaction, but you have complete choice over what happens inside you afterward, and that's exactly where the game begins.

The truth

  • The story of the Garden of Eden as a parable about taking responsibility: anyone who doesn't take responsibility for themselves is left to handle it alone.

  • Life is a mirror of the subconscious. Even without understanding which memory the emotion came from, you can still clear it.

  • An event is anything that stirs up a negative emotion, at any intensity, and that is exactly the opportunity for repair.

  • Instead of analyzing your childhood and how your father behaved toward your mother, you can simply look honestly at reality and see where the negative emotion comes up.

  • A sign that you're connected: joy, excitement, fullness, and wanting to give and not only to receive.

  • You have no control over the event or over your first instinctive reaction, but you have complete choice over the inner reaction that comes after it, and that's exactly where the game begins.

Questions and answers

Indifference: is it a blessing or a curse?

It's complicated. Sometimes it's a blessing and sometimes it isn't. Like any trait, it can work for good or for bad. The idea is that any trait that isn't kept in the right measure turns bad, so you have to find a balance between overreacting and complete indifference.

How do I know whether I'm really close to a person, or whether I'm just imagining it?

A person knows they're connected when they feel joy, excitement and fullness, when they want to love and to be loved, and above all when they want to give and to pass on something of themselves. If they aren't in that place, they'll keep pulling in situations that reflect back to them, again and again, whatever is sitting inside them.

What are events?

Life events are neutral, and an event is defined as anything that brings up a negative thought or emotion, from a small tsk of annoyance all the way to anger. Good or happy things don't count as an event in this sense. It's the negative emotion that comes up that turns the moment into an opportunity for repair.

How do I become a person who really influences people?

It isn't easy and it takes a lot of work, but it's worth it. The most basic thing is understanding other people without judgment, the understanding that whatever exists in someone else exists in me too, so when I judge them I'm judging myself.
