The Power of Better Questions

Truth, lies and authenticity

The Truth Hurts · Episode 47 · audio in Hebrew

The conversation

You know exactly how it goes. The same thought comes back, the same loop, and you can't get out of it no matter how hard you try. Gili says the problem isn't you, it's the question you're asking yourself. "Why do I never succeed?" pulls an automatic negative answer out of the brain, while a completely different question opens up somewhere else entirely. You can also move your focus on purpose: remember a moment when you were proud of yourself, and feel again what that was like in your body and on your face. And there's one small word worth watching out for: "my," as in "my fear," which turns a temporary pattern into a permanent identity.

The truth

  • Changing your focus starts with a better question. "Why do I never succeed?" versus "How do I do this and enjoy the process?" Two questions that pull two completely different answers out of the brain.

  • You can move your focus on purpose: remember a moment you were proud of yourself, and feel again how it looked on your face and in your body.

  • A romantic or passionate moment can also work as a switch that moves a stuck thought somewhere else entirely.

  • The word "my" is more dangerous than it sounds. "My fear," "my anxiety": that's a pattern, not an identity, but attaching yourself to it over and over turns it into one.

  • The questions for the episode aren't planned in advance. A trigger comes up, and Gili and Tal simply trust that the right thing will come.

  • Anyone who wants to ask a question for the next episode can do it on Spotify, directly to Gili or to Tal, or through the contact form on the website, which is where most of the messages come from.

Questions and answers

How do I get out of my head when I'm stuck in anxiety all the time and can't rise above it?

The answer is to ask better questions, because everyone falls into a mental loop sometimes and that's human. A question like "Why do I never lose weight?" pulls an automatic negative answer out of the brain, next to a question like "How do I lose weight and enjoy the process too?" which gets you moving. You can also connect on purpose to past moments of pride, success or romance, to shift your focus off it.

How do I send a question to this podcast?

You can send questions through several channels: in the comments on Spotify, by writing directly to Gili or to Tal, or through the contact form on Gili's website, which is where most of the messages come from. They make the point that it doesn't matter which channel you use. Every route works, and your question will reach them and be answered on the episode.
