Energy, frequencies and mysticism

The conversation

You feel like everything around you is changing faster than you can take in: at work, with money, in the world at large. Even if you stand still, the way Gili Man Wolner sees it, you're moving backward, because everyone else keeps going forward. She explains that every big change moves through the same stages: shock, anger, sadness, bargaining and acceptance, and anyone who doesn't recognize that can stay stuck in anger or in depression for years. The way out starts with seeing the situation exactly as it is, and not worse than it really is.

The truth

  • The farming example shows an economic shift that happens whether we want it or not: it used to take a hundred farmers, and today three people with a machine do the same work.

  • Anyone standing still is moving backward, because everyone else keeps advancing, so you have to build the kind of inner resilience that holds up against changes you can't avoid.

  • The flood of information we take in every day from Facebook, Instagram and television is far more than the human brain can process.

  • The stages of grief Gili describes: shock and denial, anger that sometimes shows up as anxiety, sadness and depression, bargaining through helping other people, acceptance, and finally creating something new.

  • People who get stuck in the anger stage or in the depression stage can stay there for years if they don't understand that it's a stage in the journey and not the end of it.

  • People tend to make a situation out to be worse than it is, as a way of protecting themselves from failure in advance, out of two fears: losing what they have, and not getting what they want.

Questions and answers

I eat well and I even sleep well, so why do I have no energy at all? And what is this shock stage I keep hearing about?

It's a stage of complete denial and confusion. The feeling of "this can't be happening." Whether it's being laid off, a pandemic, an invasion across the borders or the death of someone close, the first reaction is a refusal to believe it happened, and along with it a lot of avoidance, because you're still in shock.

Why do I have no energy at all even though I ate well and slept well? Where is energy supposed to come from in the first place?

Food doesn't really give you energy. After a big meal you usually feel tired and want to sleep, and even a long fast can raise your energy. Sleep isn't always the deciding factor either, because you can get up tired after a good night and feel alive after a short one. Energy comes mainly from habit and from movement: sports, walking, singing or dancing, anything that gets the body physically moving.

I ate well, I slept well, so why can I barely feel I have the strength to function?

Because they're afraid. Afraid of disappointing people and afraid of failing. So they paint the situation as far worse than it really is, preparing in advance for a failure that might come. The first step toward change is seeing reality exactly as it is, and not worse.

Gili's original episode description

The episode focuses on a powerful subject: energy.

Gili and Tal develop the idea that the strongest factor in life isn't measured in outward achievements but in the inner energy each of us carries. They stress how much it matters to keep your energy level high, as a way of getting better results in every area of life.

The discussion goes deep into the difference between changes that happen anyway and automatically, and the process of creating change, which is not automatic and takes awareness, attention and work.

They raise the central question, "How do I get control over what I'm doing?", and offer insights and tools for working on it.
