The conversation

The same fight, the same feeling, the same moment when you come apart, over and over, as if life insists on repeating itself. Most of the time it isn't accidental. According to Gili Man Wolner, what runs it is a childhood story, a small trauma or a big one, that turned without our noticing into a belief that dictates how we react today. The subconscious loves what is familiar even when it hurts, and that is why it is so hard to break the cycle. The question is not how to escape the pattern, but how to learn to love the part of you that is still holding on to it.

The truth

  • All of us have a childhood story, a small trauma or a big one, that turns without our noticing into a limiting belief that runs our lives.

  • Even loving parents didn't always know how to give us the emotional support we needed, and so our instinct was to suppress our feelings to survive.

  • The subconscious loves what is familiar and known, even when it hurts, and that is why we get stuck in the same cycles again and again.

  • There is nothing out there. Everything we fight or resist is a part inside us that we haven't learned to accept yet.

  • The way to love yourself is to treat everything that happens, including the least pleasant things, as a chance to learn about yourself.

  • The way she sees it, taking care of yourself is not a choice but your number one job, because you are the only person who has been and will be with you in every moment.

Questions and answers

How do you actually create a new personality and a new life?

There are four stages: taking in new knowledge, which opens a new path in your thinking; setting goals in writing, which brings order and meaning; building new habits through small, daily actions; and bringing faith in a higher power into your life, so that you can hand over to it the things that aren't in your control.

What did Benjamin Libet's famous experiment reveal about where our thoughts come from?

In Benjamin Libet's experiment, people were connected to a device that measured brain activity, and it was found that brain activity is already there before the thought or the desire reaches the conscious part of the person. From that Gili concludes that we are listening to our thoughts, not creating them.

Gili's original episode description

Everything in the universe either grows, develops or dies. An important part of personal development, maybe the main part, is healing the wounds of our past. We won't be able to move forward, to rise, to identify with our soul, as long as we're in the loop of our old wounds. The story is the same for all of us. All of us have a childhood story, whether we remember it or not, whether it was dramatic or a relatively small event, but every one of us has an event, even several traumatic events, that got engraved as traumas and turned into limiting beliefs that quietly, without anyone noticing, run our lives. Our identity is made of our strongest beliefs.

From a young age we learn to hide our feelings so that we won't be vulnerable. All of us had some event of injustice that shook us. That's the stage when we're still innocent, so usually we look to our parents for protection. The problem is that sometimes the parents themselves are the ones who cause the event, and even when they aren't the ones who hurt us, let's be honest: most of us didn't have parents who could give us the emotional support we needed, and so our instinct turns to survival, which means suppressing our feelings as a coping mechanism.

If you're not in love with yourself, you can't be in love with anything at all. There's nothing out there. It's all you! It's all reflections of us, and so when you fight something and resist it, what you're actually resisting is parts inside yourself, parts you probably haven't learned to know and accept yet. If you're in love with yourself, you'll accept the fact that everything that arrives in your life, and especially the things that don't sit well with you, are chances to learn, chances to clean up the parts of yourself you love less. Understand this: all the events, the people, the situations that happen to us, all of them carry important information that is meant to teach us to understand ourselves better and, above all, to love ourselves.

Your number one job is to take care of yourself. You are the most important person here. You are the only person who ever was and ever will be with you, who gets up with you every morning and goes to sleep with you. You are the only person who was there in every moment of your life, in the hard moment and in the happy one too.

It's your responsibility to take care of your own happiness and your own fulfillment. Nobody is going to save you, nobody can be there for you every moment. It's always you.
