The conversation

We have space flights and nanotechnology, and depression, anxiety and cancer are still turning into something close to an epidemic, which raises a question that's hard to dodge. The way Gili sees it, being Jewish is a state of consciousness you're born into, not a religion, and it has nothing to do with keeping the commandments. But the real question of Rosh Hashanah is responsibility, not identity. It's the moment you stop running and take full responsibility for what isn't working in your life.

The truth

  • Elul is the month for summing up the year, for checking which way we're facing and where we want to get to, and right now is exactly when inner intention carries great power.

  • Humanity has come an astonishing distance technologically, and yet depression, anxiety and cancer have become something close to an epidemic, which raises a real question about whether we've lived out what we were meant for.

  • Being Jewish, the way Gili defines it, is a state of consciousness you're born into and not something you do. And it's completely separate from keeping the commandments.

  • Most people can't tell you what the Ten Commandments are, so it's hard to make sweeping claims about Judaism when you don't even know the basics.

  • The sin in the story of Creation was the failure to take responsibility, and Rosh Hashanah is the chance to take responsibility for what isn't working in your life and to walk into the year in a different state of consciousness.

  • The podcast itself isn't planned in advance. They sit down at the microphone as an act of surrender to something bigger than they are.

Questions and answers

Why does this particular stretch of time, the day before Rosh Hashanah, feel so strong?

Because the whole month of Elul is about summing up the year that's gone and looking at which way we're facing and where we go next, which makes it a time when intention and inner precision carry particular weight.

What does it mean to be Jewish in your head, as a state of consciousness, rather than because I keep the commandments?

Gili explains that being Jewish is a state you're born into, not something you do, and it has nothing to do with keeping the commandments. At the level of the soul and of consciousness, the Creator speaks mostly about love.

How does the podcast actually get made week after week?

The episodes aren't planned in advance at all. They meet, take a few minutes together, and start talking straight into the microphones, a kind of process of surrendering to a force greater than they are.

What's the most important thing Gili says I should do going into Rosh Hashanah?

Sit down and write yourself a thank-you letter as though it were written from the future, thanking yourself for all the good things that happened during the year that's only just starting. It's best to write it by hand.

Why are holiday eves hard for so many people?

Holiday eves tend to stir up memories that usually aren't good, and feelings of loneliness, especially for someone who has recently divorced, someone who grew up with hard childhood memories, or someone who feels alone inside the family gathering.

Gili's original episode description

Right before Rosh Hashanah, Gili and Tal go back in time and explain how the podcast The Truth Hurts (HaEmet Ko'evet) came to be.

In the episode they talk about how they coped and built a platform that lets them speak about the subjects they're connected to and pass the messages on.

And of course we didn't forget: in Gili's tips corner she shares how to start the year in a sweet and inspiring way!

May the year ahead be a good and sweet one.

About the podcast

Listening to The Truth Hurts feels like sitting in on a healing session.

The truth can hurt. It’s right there in the name. But we’re not here to cause pain. Quite the opposite.

In each episode, two women sit down for an honest conversation: an Emotional Healer and her client.

We talk about healing and consciousness, faith and science, the body and soul, personal growth, energy, and different approaches to healing. Above all, we face the truth no one says out loud: everything around us is upside down.

Is this podcast for you?

  • You want to hear the truth, and you’re ready to face it. (Yes, those are two different things.)
  • You want to gain insight and improve your quality of life.
