You always want one more thing. A little more recognition, a little more quiet, a little bit more, and the moment you get it the next want is already waiting for you. Gili explains that this wanting isn't just another feeling that rises and fades. According to Kabbalah it is the actual material that all of reality is built out of, in inanimate matter and in us. The way she sees it, every want that comes up in you points to something you're missing right at that moment, and that holds for wanting food just as much as for wanting appreciation or control. The question she invites you to ask isn't how to get rid of the wanting. It's which wants are really running you.

The truth

  • The will to receive for ourselves is, according to the kabbalists, the material that all of Creation is built out of, including inanimate matter, like gravity.

  • The Creator made the world to do good for His creations, and the concealment in the world is the game through which we're meant to discover that for ourselves.

  • Every want points to a lack. If you want something, that's a sign you don't have it right now.

  • There are several kinds of will to receive: physical (food, sleep, money), emotional (control, honor, love), and even a will for wisdom and curiosity.

  • There's a difference between a pure will to receive for yourself and a will to receive in order to give, which counts as one of the highest wants of all.

  • Spotting which want is running you is a central tool in the clearing process, because a will to receive for yourself is hiding underneath every negative emotion.

Questions and answers

Why did the Creator make the world?

In the kabbalistic approach, the Creator made His creations to do good for them and to give them endless pleasure. That's the basic idea the whole process of Creation follows from. It's all meant to bring us to enjoy the good the Creator has to offer.

If we want something, what does that say about us?

A want always points to a lack. If a want for something comes up, that's a sign we don't have it right now, whether it's food, sleep or anything else. That experience of lacking is what movement, and all of Creation, come out of.

Why is there concealment in this world instead of everything being out in the open from the start?

The concealment is there so that there can be a game. If everything were clear and out in the open there would be no challenge and nothing to discover. The concealment lets us search on our own for the way to turn the will to receive into a will to give, the way the Creator does.

What kinds of will to receive are there besides the material one?

Beyond the physical appetites like food, sleep and money, there's a will to receive in the emotional sense: control, honor, appreciation and love. There's also a will to receive wisdom, which doesn't necessarily show up as wanting to be the smartest person in the world, but as curiosity and a thirst to know and to look into things.

Why couldn't a communist society like Soviet Russia hold up over time?

According to Baal HaSulam, human nature is egoistic, so any society built on ideology alone, whether kibbutzim or communism, has no real "fuel" to drive it, and can't hold up for more than 70 years.
