The conversation

There are things you know without knowing where they came from, and without having a word for them. You can push them deep down, keep quiet about them for years, and build a tidy life plan instead, one that's supposed to make up for it. Gili tells how on the very day she checked off every item on the list, the degree, the career, the family, she felt for the first time in her life what it means to have your heart break. That wasn't an end point. It was the beginning of understanding that she actually knew nothing.

The truth

  • She grew up in a completely secular family in Tel Aviv, with no exposure to religion or to spirituality.

  • She was afraid of dolls with open eyes and used to bury them deep in the closet every night before she went to sleep, until the night one of them found its way back into her bed.

  • Checking off a full life list (a degree, marriage, children, a career) is exactly what led to a feeling of emptiness and a broken heart.

  • While she was teaching as a student teacher, standing in front of a whole class, she saw the students for a moment as if they were on a battlefield in a world war, and she went on teaching as usual.

  • The book Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind and her studies in numerology were what opened the door for her into the spiritual world.

  • On the day she finished the list she felt no satisfaction at all, only emptiness and a broken heart, and that is exactly where something completely different started for her.

Questions and answers

Who is Gili Man Wolner?

Gili was born in Tel Aviv to a secular family. As a child she had experiences she couldn't explain and had no name for: conversations going on inside her, and a sense of energy in objects. After a defining event with her son, she understood that she "knows that she knows".

What happened to Gili on the day everything finally came together for her, everything she had planned?

She was standing there with an honors degree, a marriage, a house in Tel Aviv, children and a career that meant something. All of it achieved. And instead of satisfaction, she describes feeling for the first time in her life what it means to have your heart break. What she understood along with it: the things themselves don't give you the feeling she was looking for.

What happened to her son Yair, and how did that event affect her?

On a Saturday night after Shabbat, her son Yair fell down a flight of stairs and was badly hurt. Gili says that in those moments she heard voices in her head saying to her, "Wake up, this is your child."

How does Gili define the role she plays in her work?

Gili defines herself as a "lighthouse". She's a vessel in service, one that sees the point where a person is standing and the point they need to reach, and gives them tools to get there. She doesn't do the healing herself. She compares it to a car that's low on tire pressure or missing a connection, and her job is to help the person start moving forward again.

Why is the day everything came together the day I feel emptiest?

There is what you know that you know, like reading or writing. There is what you know that you don't know, like a foreign language you never studied. And the really fascinating part is what you don't know that you don't know. She uses that to explain how, after achieving everything in life, she found out that she hadn't actually understood a thing, and that was the starting point of her journey.
