Why Go to Therapy?

Episode 6 · April 27, 2023

Healing, treatment and trauma

The Truth Hurts · Episode 6 · audio in Hebrew

The conversation

You tried medication, you changed your diet, you went to doctors, you sat with psychologists, and the body still isn't getting better. That's what Tal went through for almost four years, until she found, in her words, that the perfect checklist hadn't healed her, because the way she sees it the source was in the soul and not in the body. Gili Man Wolner explains, as she presents it, why even a good practitioner doesn't hand you answers: she shows you what you can't see about yourself. And she has sessions of her own, she says, because even someone who works with other people has blind spots.

The truth

  • As Gili Man Wolner presents it, you can't really see yourself completely, and so a good practitioner doesn't hand out answers. They reflect back what the client can't see on their own.

  • Gili says that practitioners have sessions of their own too, because they have blind spots just like everybody else.

  • A world full of ways to communicate doesn't guarantee less loneliness. The real epidemic of this generation, the way Gili sees it, is that we've lost the inner connection to ourselves, not the connection with other people.

  • As she puts it, the numbers are hard: a suicide every 40 seconds somewhere in the world, a high divorce rate in Israel, one in every four people taking psychiatric medication, and cancer rates that keep climbing. The way she sees it, they show that the pace of modern life isn't solving the distress.

Questions and answers

Why did Tal come to Gili in the first place?

Tal had been sick with a serious physical illness for about four years and had tried every option there was: medication, nutritional treatments, psychologists and practitioners across the whole spectrum, and nothing helped. She understood that the source was in the soul, but she didn't know what to do with that understanding, and that's what brought her in.

Why does anyone need sessions at all, if you can just talk to friends or analyze yourself?

Because it's hard to see yourself from the inside. The brain translates what it sees according to what's already sitting in the subconscious. In a session there's somebody on the outside who can see the things you can't see about yourself.

Is it true that knowing the problem is already halfway to the solution?

Not exactly. What comes up in the conversation is that knowing the problem is an important part of the solution, but it isn't half of it. Most of the way is the journey itself.

Where does Gili stand on psychiatric medication?

Gili has no blanket position against medication. In acute situations it may be needed for chemical balance in the brain. But she stresses that a pill doesn't treat the root of the problem, and that if you are taking one, it's worth using that stretch of time to do deeper work on yourself alongside it.

Gili's original episode description

The sixth episode comes with the big questions:

Why treatment in the first place? What is it good for, and who is it good for?

What kinds of treatment are there, and what's the deal with it anyway?

We've all gotten used to settling in life, and some people even make suffering sacred...

That's how we were taught, that's what we saw people doing.

But is that really what life is?

Tal Eckerling and Gili Man Wolner take on all these questions and more in the episode.

And there's more! There are tips for anyone starting out on the therapeutic journey, and on how to get the results you're after.
